EFCC Saved 800 Convictions In Eleven Years

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has secured more than 800 convictions with hundreds of cases pending in various courts across the country, Chairman of the commission, Ibrahim Lamorde, said.

Speaking at a workshop on budget monitoring and tracking, organised by the EFCC for non governmental organisations and local government staff in Gusau, Zamfara State, Lamorde said the programme was aimed at ensuring citizens participation in budget processes for better service delivery.

Represented by the commission’s Deputy Director Public Affairs, Osita Nwajah, Lamorde lamented that sometimes funds allocated for provision of basic social amenities and infrastructure are either embezzled or diverted. “This occurs partly due to lack of monitoring of such releases”, he said.

The EFCC boss added that the training was for stakeholders to understand their role.
He said: “You must bear in mind that participation in the budget process is a constitutional right, therefore, your insistence to participate in it does not violate any law. Rather, it strengthens governance and leads to accelerated growth and reduction of corrupt practices at all levels of governance.”
